Guide for Directions

When I was living in New York about 7 years ago I was on a personal development and get myself together adventure. It turned out to be one of the best times in my life. I grew tremendously and learned so much. One of the biggest things I learned is this.... "the distance between Avenues are longer,  but you cannot get anywhere  taking the short distances between the streets" Manhattan is a grid system of streets. The avenues (generally) run north and south. The streets (generally) run east and west. It became my rule of thumb to get myself around the city. To walk from 4th Ave. to 5th Ave. was sometimes a longer walk than walking between 53rd St and 54th St. The length of the block was different depending on whether you were walking along the avenue or the street.  When I came to this realization it dawned on me, sure I could walk 5th Ave. north and south all day long and get somewhere, but I would wind up seeing the same things over and over again....

Inner Voice

And suddenly, something said to "stop." We have all had those intuitions. We are all going in a direction and suddenly something inside of us tells us to take a detour. But how many of us listen? We think we can handle the road ahead, we think that we have it together. How in tune with yourself are you really, if you cannot stop when you experience this sudden moment? I believe that we have a connection with ourselves that is always constant, however not always noticed. I believe that we have an ability to trust our deepest guts for a greater cause, however we choose to continue moving in a conscious way because that is easy, it is comfortable, it is known. But what if the unconscious guidance is actually better for us? Imagine a road that you are traveling and it is all sunshine and blue skies. No one would want to veer from that path onto another path that is unknown. We as humans struggle to accept the unknown, we always talk about being okay with it, but rarely do w...

How often is it that we get used to the roads we travel? We become focused on our routines and our schedules that we are almost predictable. There is nothing wrong with that, if it is working for you. In fact I highly recommend it for some of the people I work with because those routines keep them focused, guided, and grounded. For others of you, like myself, we need that detour every so often. Recently driving in southern California I experienced a detour that was one of those moments you want to hold onto forever. Attempting to miss the traffic, I went along the side roads. It has been awhile since I took these side roads and the streets were altered a little bit, well in a big way. They make it impossible to make a last might decision to go the right way, when you are headed the wrong direction. I kept moving forward. I took the road I was unintentionally forced to go, with the intention of making a u-turn just ahead. That became less and less of a possibility; however,  I did...
