Communication

"Our emotions don’t affect how we communicate, or what we say. In fact, the opposite is found to be true: the way we communicate can influence our mood." - Unknown

Communication comes in several forms. We have verbal communication, non verbal communication, internal communication, and external communication

Verbal communication is the one we are most familiar with, it is the audible words that leave our mouths and enter the space around us.

Non verbal communication is the second most familiar, it is our body language, our subtle cues that tell others around us what we are or are not saying.

Internal communication does have a business definition but let me create a new concept for us momentarily. Internal communication is the way we speak to ourselves, the thoughts that we think, the role playing we do in our head. It is the "read to yourself" voice that we all have but rarely pay any attention to it because no one wants to admit they talk to themselves... insert winking face here, you are not crazy for talking to yourself. It is the little voice inside your head that assists in the daily functioning of becoming who you are and who you want to be.

External communication again does have a business definition but let me again create a new concept for us momentarily. External communication is the sum of all the communication previously discussed. It is the outward presence of our audible words forming, our behaviors through body language, and the action of the internal communication. It is the decision to express ourselves beyond the walls of our minds, it is our thoughts put into the world. It is our presence in the world.

Circling back to the impact of our emotions. If these types of communication are now taken into consideration, we can recognize that our mood is greatly influenced by all of our communicating ways. The audible, inaudible, thoughts, and actions create the outcome of our moods.

When our affect and mood are congruent we have balance. This balance can be both positive or negative. However, keep in mind that the shift of that balance will lead you to that direction because it is the focus. If our balance is leaning towards positivity we will begin to represent a more positive outcome. And vice versa for negativity.

Keep it bright. Keep it positive.
